Inspired from a myspace message: I've got so many vsts that I spend all my time going through them and looking for sounds. I seem to only get inspired by having a new set of presets. I use a vst for a few days and then I want something else. Alot of times I don't even feel like making beats anymore. Any ideas?

The advantage of having many sounds/samples/presets at your disposal is counter-balanced by your ability to sort and organize them. The joy of finding an inspirational starting point verse the emptiness of not finding one. There are certain studio "chores" that will help in avoiding these Searching-For-Something-Usable-While-My-Desire-To-Make-Music-Is-Draining moments.

1. Re-organize your sounds: Saving usable patches in a favorites sub-menu and marking sounds for future use. Almost all workstations have the ability to mark presets and patches can be resaved under a different name to indicate potential. In any (WIN) Explorer folder search, contents can be sorted alphabetically. Putting a Zero at the start of a file insures it rises to the top. Most Samplists Mark Records and even have a 'go to' crate.

2. Create NEW foundation material. Don't always peruse and plan; sometimes program. The ability to make your own presets and patches is a valuable feature in any sound module. In this case, the idea of Never Running Out Of Sounds is MULTIPLIED by the inspirational benefits of having a custom library of choices that will always match your production style because you designed them.

3. Fresh Start verse Fine Finish. There will always be tracks and compositions that started off great, but somehow lost their way and became... average. Stripping a track back down to its Inspirational Core and starting in a new direction is a great way to maximize the sounds you have already chosen to use.

4. And Lastly, Turn Inward for creative direction as opposed to Sounds Leading the Way.  Make the music in your mind is what we say sometimes. Create the melody and even drum work without your sequencer and workstation engaged and then go about fleshing out your ideas. At this point it's a search for the right voicing to match your Inspired Ideas and not presets and patches for ideas and inspiration.

what i did was organized like this 1) drum loops by b.p.m. so when i got an idea i just drop a loop just to start,(2) i did a folder for pianos a folder for bass a folder for synths ,etc.... i got libraries like urban amunition ueberschall crunkzilla, pure fire etc.. i just berak them and put them on the folders i just told you, that way when u got an idea you dont have to be wondering where are those sounds that u like ,for drums one shots i did the same , kick folder,snare,etc... in the kick folder for example i did diferent folders inside for: hip hop kicks ,dance kicks,pop,etc... all my fx did the same all gun shots one folder, people, foleys, ambience etc... then u need a slicer for those drum loops, cuz someties we like the sounds but not the way they are programed, so you put them in the slicer and re program them the way you like, u can use, fl studio frutty slicer, fxpansion Guru, you can use a program called reaper u can stretch those loops with no quality sacrifice, so if you need a 86 b.p.m, but the one u like is 80 b.pm. it would stretch that loop and sounds perfect ( at least it does for me) i just recently got a open labs MIKO it has a program called karsyn that program organize all your vst's sounds like i told u before, synths, pianos,etc.. when u need a piano just look for the piano you like and he found the piano and plugin for you, a similar program you can get for that is native instrument KORE, let me told you it would take you some time to do all this but is whorth the effort, next time your client ask you for a sound you would amaze them how fast and how many variety of styles to choose from u got, remember the key is organization.

god bless and remember who give u that talent, we can't change the world but we can bless those close to us.

Thanks for joining and being active in the forum...

Organization is tough past a certain point of accumulated material.

It starts to be about what you use and not what you have. Stuff gets uninstalled and sounds/samples get thrown in a Never-Look-Here folder.

Sometimes I like having a trusted, small set of sounds I can guarantee good results from. That 'go to' set of drums and streamlined library allows me to focus on the actual making of music. I hate trolling through sounds for snares or kicks. I generally pick a style, not something as obvious as a folder of hip hop or R&B, and decide this is the tone and go forward from there.

That's the reason I sometimes get dissatisfied with ROMplers -where all the sounds fit in neat categories.

It already feels like a limit when I decide what instrument is going to voice a particular melody.

That's why I've been turning to synths and avoiding the Lead, Bass and Pad categories and just focus on what type of sound- sustained or dropped that can express the melody. Mostly, the traditional instrument categories (guitar, paino, string etc) define such a known quality, I like to use experimental effects and processing to retain their character but break away from their common, Bread and Butter qualities.
