I am just used to it...but I wonder if 49 keys would irriate me that much. Most of the phrases I end up writing whether bassline or not usually dont span beyond an octave or two. If I have a quirky sample that I am adding in...i like to have plenty of room to experiment with different pitches that is when i would miss the extra real estate.....but I digress.

RE: AKAI MPK 49

The 49 keys suggest basslines to me although I don't know how many producers wouldn't already own a full sized board. Sometimes the workflow is MPC to battery to sequencer. I considered the MPD24, but I'd miss the onboard sequencer since that's where alot of the inspiration comes from.

RE: AKAI MPK 49

This thing looks sick. I may finally own an akai product (seeing as how I missed the boat on that whole mpc thing…haha). I always wanted one but I went the asr-10 route instead....so Its kind of like now I can have an mpc with dual core processors, 2gb of ram, and half a terabyte of storage (when you add my pc that is). This is a great idea in my humble opinion. I am sure there is some kind of downside (besides being only 49 keys) but I am not sure of what it is. I had already been thinking about getting a new controller and all I really wanted was something with transport controls, a handful of sliders, etc. Granted that order can be filled by many/most controllers out there these days but additional sequencing features of the mpk make this a little more interesting. If any one gets their hands on one of these I would love to hear first hand experiences and gripes if any. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

sean

AKAI MPK 49

The Akai MPK49 ushers in a new era for USB/MIDI controllers by combining a high-quality, 49-key, semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch and 12 MPC-style drum pads. 48 total pads are accessible via 4 pad banks. The pads feature popular MPC Note Repeat function and Swing parameters, and the Akai MPK49 performance controller has its own arpeggiator, for creating quick, creative riffs in seconds.

The Akai MPK49 features MPC-style Full Level and 12 Levels functions on its pads, and MPC Swing can be applied to both Note Repeat and Arpeggio functions. Tap Tempo and time-division buttons allow for real-time control of Note Repeat and Arpeggio clock speeds. The Akai MPK49 delivers an amazing 72 assignable controls, with assignable inputs that include an expression pedal, footswitch, pitch bend and modulation wheel.

Key Features

8 full-sized, 360 degree rotation pots, each with 3 banks for 24 pots total
MPC-style note repeat and all new arpeggiator
8 full-sized sliders with 3 controller banks for each for 24 sliders total
8 assignable backlit switches with 3 controller banks each for 24 switches total
MMC/MIDI Start Stop transport buttons
Large, easy-to-read custom LCD display

Applications:
Beat Creation
MIDI sequencing
Live Performance

http://www.akaipro.com/prodMPK49.php
